Day Thirteen - Hunford Cup Event Two Final

Well, it won’t be an exaggeration if we call it the clash of the titans. Everyone has been waiting with baited breath for this game, the finals of the HunFord Open 2010. The only two undefeated teams of the HunFord cup facing each other and this had all the makings of an epic finale. On one side was the intrepid and untiring team of Vinu and Apurva, and facing them were the ever so cool and consistent Nagesh and Supriya.

What everyone witnessed was a treat to any tennis enthusiast with long rallies, amazing forehands, deft drop shots and what not. Any account of that epic game would not do justice to the quality of tennis which was on display.

The game started with Nagesh serving his fast and fierce serves, which were too hot to handle for Vinu and Apurva hence allowing Nagesh and Supriya to take an easy 1-0 lead. It was then Vinu’s turn to serve and all his serves in the first game were patiently and deftly returned by Nagesh and Supriya. Vinu could not hold on to his serve and in the blink of the moment Nagesh and Supriya were seen leading the game 3-0. After some amazing rallies and great service games, the score read 5-2 in Nagesh-Supriya’s favor. However Vinu and Apurva were not to be left behind and they came back strongly with some strong baseline game by Vinu and some slick drop shots by Apurva. They made a strong come back in the match with just 1 game difference and the score reading 6-5 in Nagesh-Supriya’s favour. They had a golden opportunity to equalize as next was Vinu’s chance to serve. If Vinu keeps his serve it would be 7-7 for both teams, but Nagesh-Supriya had other intentions in mind as they did not want to give the other team any chance to come back in the game. Their determined returns on Vinu’s splendid serves accompanied with some amazing game at the net by Nagesh won them this game with score reading 8-6. After this Nagesh-Supriya just had to maintain the game difference in check to win the tournament, and they did the same finally winning the HunFord Open 2010 with the final score 10-7.

The spectators were witness to a very determined and consistent play from Supriya and Nagesh’s amazing reach being returned in equal fervor by some amazing baseline shots from Vinu accompanied by very effective and neat net play by Apurva. Finally it was the game of tennis which won with the memories of the grand finale etched into everyone’s reminiscence for ages to come.

A small prize distribution ceremony was organized after the game with guest of honors and everyone’s beloved Camille Miller and respected parents of Aditya D. The winner prize was a stunning looking Nike cap and the runner’s up prize was given a very beautiful and cool water bottle.

Firstly the Event-1 prizes were distributed by Camille with the winner prize being given to the most consistent and strong team of Raj-Sampath. The runner’s up were the graceful team of Kanchan-Nishanth. There was also a prize for the best upcoming tennis player in the whole camaraderie, and by everyone’s consensus the prize was given to one of the most promising stars of Event-1 Kanchan.

The Event-2 prizes were distributed by Adi’s parents with the winner prize being given to again the most consistent and strong team of Supriya-Nagesh. The runner’s up was the never-give-up team of Apurva-Vinu. There was another prize for the most consistent tennis player in this event and by consensus it was given to the ever-so-dependable Supriya.

A token of appreciation was given to our very own Mani for being the photographer of the tournament. Another thank you gift was given to Ajeet for making our tournament world-renowned by writing those interesting blogs.

A grand and epic tournament thus came to an end. It was an event which enjoyed a magnificent participation from the players and spectators alike. There were just 4 victors but no one ended up disappointed as it was the game of tennis which won as it brought everyone together, on a tennis court off course, as was promised in our first communication. Didn’t we all succeed!!!
Until we meet again!!!

Teams Profile

Team-A1 Tanmay-Lopa :

This team is the team made by Almighty, a team in tennis and team for Life time. Both the players played to their strengths and surprised almost everyone. They were almost in the semi-final but missed it by a whisker.

Lopa initially being apprehensive of playing displayed some good tennis and supported Tanmay. On the other hand Tanmay, who could be renamed as “Border Security Force” displayed some excellent tennis covering the court from left to right, top to bottom and picking almost every shot that came to their side of the court. Like it’s said in army, just twisted a little to fit in tennis “No ball can pass this court not on my watch, unless and until it’s going out.”

At the end a very balanced team and all enjoyed the every game played by them.

Team-A2 Sachin-Shardul:

A team that can be called as S&S. Though lost most of their games, but won the hearts of their opponents and the viewers. There were some excellent shots played by Sachin, which made the other team think twice about how they should tackle the threat called as S&S. Even there were few smashing serves from him towards the end matches.

Shardul on the other hand played a very safe game and placed the ball all over the court. He tried to make sure that there is less number of unforced errors. He picked some very amazing shots with ease and elegance.

It was good to watch you guys and also how your game improved as the tournament progressed.

Team-A3 Ajeet-Vinayak

This team can very well be compared with a phoenix. After losing their first match they managed to reach to semi finals.

Ajeet as usual was always found within 6 inches of net, and displayed some beautiful drops and fearsome smashes which not only left few more cracks on the court but also saw balls flying outside the court scared of Ajeet’s court breaking smashes.

Vinayak was a total surprise, his game showed mammoth improvements as the event progressed and few shots from him made the other teams run for the points. They clearly showed that they are one of the strong team by some good coordination and balanced display.

Kudos to your efforts on the court.

Team-A4 Soppin & Harpal

Who says Karnataka and Gujarat do not share the boundaries. Well not to comment on geography but these two players definitely shared the court and displayed some awesome tennis.

Never showing any lack of co-ordination the team even managed to grab a seat in Semis. This was one of the perfect combination of lefty and righty (in the likes of Dada Saurav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid). Soppin proving his metal on the court by picking up few very difficult shots was equally complimented by Harpal who made the other team run to answer his shots. Harpal was new to Tennis, well I had to write it here, because his game always indicated towards a longer bond.

Awesome display guys…

Team B1 – Rajesh & Malini

Impossible itself says “ I m Possible” and its proved by this team.
Considered as the underdog. This team might not have won a game but definitely it won the hearts of all the viewers and the opponent team. They had their first game against Raj and Sampath and were given the option to swap the partners. But they stick to their team and surprised everyone with their game towards later part of the tournament.

This had some ground breaking effects. Now Malini is found on court and Vinu is at home :)
Rajesh displayed some awesome shots and even played a very controlled game towards the end. Few of his shots would have made experts run for their money. Malini showed some great improvements towards the end, least to mention she even hit an Ace in the last game.

Good Game Guys … Three Cheers to your spirit….

Team B2 – Kanchan & Nishanth

Consistency and Class can as well be used as synonym for this team.

One of the finalist, this team displayed class game of tennis. Both the players executed their shots with such an ease and class that it was a sheer pleasure to watch them play.

Nishanth was very calm and composed throughout this tournament. The way he played shots made them look very simple and elegant. His backhand was a treat to eyes. Kanchan on other hand displayed some powerful forehands and made the other team sweat to save a point. It doesn’t matter who wins the final. But the game displayed by this team was a sheer pleasure to watch.

Great Game Guys… Keep going…

Team B3 – Raj and Sampath

Too Strong to be reckon with…. Didn’t lose a single game…

Well I don’t need to say much for this team. The points tally says all. Well they underestimated themselves and graded them as beginner, after seeing their game even players from Event 2 were apprehensive of their shots and rallies.

Raj, displaying an aggressive game always kept the opponents guessing whether it will be a drop or a shot. Sampath displayed quite a consistent game and picked almost every shot that was not going out :). Clearly the favorites, it was a pleasure watching their game.
Keep going, there are more tournaments held outside HunFord :)

Team B4 – Akhil and Rebecca

This is the one team which was intercontinental. A team which proved the SAP can as well work efficiently with Non SAP.. (Akhil is from SAP EDWH and Rebecca from Non-SAP application)

Both the players despite being beginners showed some good tennis. In one of the games which stretched till tie breaker, both the players held their nerves to cling the game. It was good to see them make some nice shots. Akhil provided power to the game and Rebecca provided the agility. Together they played some nice shots and made their opponents run all over the court.

Good Games guys…

Team C1 – Shaunak & Prajeet

Another combination of lefty and a righty. The duo displayed some awesome tennis shots and some breathtaking serves. I bet few of them would have been difficult even for the Tennis pros. Prajeet can be titled as the most deceiving player, few of the back hand returns he played were simply out of the box. The spin in shots would make Shane Warne think he balls straight. All Kudos to Prajeet for such an amazing display of Tennis shots.

Shaunak had a serve which made the opponent wonder why someone didn’t come up with the body guards for Tennis like it’s in Cricket. He displayed some very good shots from the baseline and from net. His agility and speed in the game made it look more like Fast & Furious.

In all it was a sheer pleasure to see you guys perform.

Team C2 – Swami & Vinit

Swami is a true swami of “Tennis, Cricket, Badminton….” Well the list is long but I only know these games… :)

Watching Swami Play was like seeing a text book style shots and volleys. He played at almost every part of the court with the same ease. His backhands, drops and Shots from the base line and net, in fact every shot was beautifully crafted and perfectly executed. His style definitely gave viewers the feeling of some Grand Slam match.

His opponents and his team mate definitely learned a lot from him.

Good Game Guys…

Team C3 – Nagesh & Supriya

Precision and Consistency are the two words which describe this team. This team has won all the matches it played till now.

Nagesh is like a Great Wall of China standing on the net. And Supriya is again the same part of the Wall but at the Baseline. Nothing seemed to cross this wall. Opponent team was left wondering which part of the court to be targeted. Their precision while hitting the shots made it appear as, the court stretched itself whenever they hit the shot. Ball appearing to go out would change its mind and drop on the line. Such was the consistency in their game. They stick to the basics and avoided making any unforced errors “the secret of winning the match”.

It was great pleasure to see you both play.

Team D1 – Mayank and Noble

A perfect combination of Power and Control.

Noble displayed some raw power in his serves and Mayank as always played a very controlled game. Some of the serves from Noble were so fast that it didn’t even give opponent a chance to blink an eye before the ball passed him, however the only consolation was that the ball passed him without touching. Mayank, as known for his controlled game, could even play drop shot at a most ferociously hit shot.

All the matches this team played were very fast, and the lines man had to take some tough calls. They were little scared as well, seeing the power in the shots J. The duo not only displayed some very good tennis, but made the viewers eat the last bit of their nails.

Awesome game guys…

Team D2 – Vinu & Apurva

The most cool team.. Not by their appearance but the way they won their very first game and all the games from there on. After successfully defending the 3 match points in row they kept their nerves to win the match.

This team always played with a strategy and kept innovating on it. Vinu being one of the most agile and fast player covered almost all of the court and Apurva equally supported him by hitting game winning smashes form the net. Both the players played to their strength and made the other team commit the mistakes. Few of the rallies were very long but Vinu hardly committed any unforced error or got carried away. He is the one player who can hit a smash standing outside baseline. Apurva on the other hand displayed calm and composure while playing his shots and result, the team was one of the finalist.

Keep Going Guys…..

Team D3- Sonu & Adi

The team with short name and short players. But not short on Tennis. These guys were extra tall when came on the court.

Adi was a tallest amongst all when came on playing at net. I believe we can call him ‘Neta of Net” Few of the shots he played at the net made the other team think ‘how tall is he?’. The shots were so powerful that few smashes resulted in ball looping out of the court “Poor ball wanted to escape the beating”. His serves were also fast and furious. So were his cross court shots. This attack was equally supported by Sonu on the baseline. She also stretched herself and gave and apt answer to all the shots that came at the baseline. So consistent were her shots that the opponents found the court too small for the ball to pass these two guys. They were forced to think where to hit? As on the net, Adi will not give them a chance and on baseline Sonu will not leave a chance.

The two displayed some good Tennis.

Day Twelve - HunFord Cup Event One Final

A fitting climax to the epic tournament. Well actually not the tournament, but to the event 1 of the tournament. This special final of the event 1 was even more special which started with the cake distribution by Sampath on occasion of his wife’s b’day. Then the crowd was wintness to the epic marathon of the event 1. This match was fittingly “The Match of the Tournament” for the Event 1 group. Raj and Sampath taking on Kanchan and Nishanth in the epic battle. The teams had already faced each other in the leagues where Raj and Sampath prevailed over Kanchan and Nishanth by good margin. But the performance of Kanchan and Nishanth in the semis was unforgettable where they crushed their opponent to win a single sided match.

The first serve of the game was started by Raj, known for his fierce serves in the event 1. Kanchan and Nishanth displayed their cool game to clinch the first game taking an early lead. The wristy shots from Nishanth and amazinlgy lofted shots from both right as well as left hand by Kanchan ensured that they will have a smooth ride to the title. Soon Raj and Sampath were seen trailing at 4 – 1. Then Raj and Sampath started the epic fightback of the tournament going on to win the next 5 games in a row. This marathon ride from Raj and Sampath saw Nishanth and Kanchan squandering an early lead of 4 – 1, to follow by 4 – 6. All this while crowd witness some of the most lenghty rallies, I would say not only of the event 1 but of the entire tournament. This included shots ranging from deftly played passes across the nets to unbelievly played lofted shots from the baseline. Although the game canot be called a fast paced but had enough class to show all the beginners to how to play the classy tennis. Wide range of shots were also accompanied by too many startegy changes by the players as sometimes Raj and sometimes Kanchan came upto net to counter attack each other. Where Raj and Sampath were trying to attack Kanchan, Kanchan held her nerve to return most of the shots to the other side.
Very soon 6 – 7, Nishanth was serving for two match points. These words seemed to have fuelled energy in all the four players as we witnessed two most lengthiest ralliesof the match with all the four players running all around the court – Kanchan and Nishanth in an effort to save the game, Raj and Sampath in the desire to finish off the game. The efforts of Kanchan & Nishanth bore fruit when the match was locked at 7 -7 and now the game was on to 9, no tie breakers. While Kanchan was starting to tire down and Nishanth was playing some loose shots, Raj and Sampath upped their tempo playing some delicate drop shots accompanied by ferocious forehand shots. At this moment we saw the best out of the two teams when the match went on to 8 – 8. Very soon the tiredness and frustation was very much visible on Kanchan when she made some unforced errors and Nishanth played a couple of loose shots. Serving at 8-9, Nishanth made a double fault but still scraped through to deuce, but Raj and Sampath held on to their nerves finishing off the match in the third duece of the game, wining this encounter of the nerves and the title of the event 1.
Folks if you missed out on this one you missed the match of the tournament where undoubtedly the two best teams in the event 1 were playing their best tennis of the tournament. Raj and Sampath played equally well to clinch the title after being down at 4-1 and going on to win this marathon battle of nerves. However nobody would disagree that Kanchan was clearly the player of the match picking and returning some of the most difficult ones. Guys tune in for more another epic battle between Nagesh / Supriya and Vinu / Apurva is still to follow. If the beginners Finale was fun, this experts finale is going to be rocking. Be there for the rocking finale of the rocking tournament and award distribution crermony.

Final Score :
Raj / Sampath bt Kanchan/ Nishanth : 10 – 8

HunFord Open Day 11, the last semi final for the tournament and for the event 2 as well.
Aditya and Sonu were up against the unbeaten duo of Nagesh and Supriya. But this did not let their spirits down as crowd witnessed a ruthless battle between the two sides. Nagesh and Supriya took an early lead riding high on Nagesh’s cracking shots at net and Supriya’s classic winners from baseline running to 6-2. But the game was not yet over. Aditya and Sonu showed a braveheart fightback with Adi matching Nagesh’s net shots and converting it to winners while Sonu’s brilliant placements from baseline fetched them points as well. It was then that Nagesh and Supriya really lifted their game to heights wiining the match by 8 – 5.
