Day Eleven

HunFord Open Day 11, the last semi final for the tournament and for the event 2 as well.
Aditya and Sonu were up against the unbeaten duo of Nagesh and Supriya. But this did not let their spirits down as crowd witnessed a ruthless battle between the two sides. Nagesh and Supriya took an early lead riding high on Nagesh’s cracking shots at net and Supriya’s classic winners from baseline running to 6-2. But the game was not yet over. Aditya and Sonu showed a braveheart fightback with Adi matching Nagesh’s net shots and converting it to winners while Sonu’s brilliant placements from baseline fetched them points as well. Soon Nagesh and Supriya were facing Aditya and Sonu 6-5, and it looked that it will be another marathon game for the experts. It was then that Nagesh and Supriya really lifted their game to heights wiining the match by 8 – 5.

Day Ten

HunFord Open Day 10, witnessed two semifinals being played at Bridford.

In the first match, Ajeet and Vinayak were up against Raj and Sampath for second semifinal for event 1. Raj and Sampath already being tipped as favourites for their aggressive game, displayed their intense tennis on court and were up 4 – 0 in no time as they broke both Vinayak and Ajeet’s serve. However, Ajeet and Vinayak were not bowing out too easily and showed some movements in the court. There were some cracking smashes from Ajeet at net, one of which saw the ball rebounding from the turf and sailing over the court to the pond and some good returns from Vinayak. However they were unable to withstand the fast and furious serves of Raj and some intelligent winners being hit by Sampath. This ensured that Raj and Sampath now face Kanchan and Nishanth in finals for the event 1 as they one the match by 6 – 2.

The second match saw Apurva and Vinu, D1, up against Prajeet and Shaunak, C1. As was expected the crowd was witness to some amazing cross court rallies and some cheeky shots being played at nets. Vinu and Apurva were quick to grab some offerings offered by Shaunak and Prajeet taking a 3 – 1 lead. However Shaunak and Prajeet quickly bounced back and soon the scores were level at 3 – 3. But some unforced errors from Prajeet and few shots of Shaunak not crossing the net again saw Vinu and Apurva take lead. Where there were few chances at net which Apurva converted to points, Vinu was showing an amazing baseline game covering the entire baseline and hitting some furious shots. Finally Shaunak and Prajeet ran out of fuel and lost the match to Vinu and Apurva by 8 – 6. So there we also have the first finalist for event 2.

Final Scores :
Raj / Sampath bt Ajeet / Vinayak : 6 – 2
Vinu / Apurva bt Shaunak / Prajeet : 8 – 6

Day Nine

The long wait was over in HunFord Open Day 9, when finally this seasons knockout round i.e. semis commenced. Day 9 saw A1 – Soppin / Harpal – face to face with B2 – Kanchan / Nishanth. Where Soppin / Harpal showed a tremendous comeback after their defeat in second league match to top their group, high hopes were on Kanchan and Nishanth as well who have showed an amazing class throughout the tournament. But in this game we saw another aspect of game in Kanchan and Nishanth’s game where they played aggressive tennis not giving any opportunity to Soppin / Harpal. Some unforced errors from Harpal saw Kanchan and Nishanth first taking a leading and then extending it to 4 – 1. Soppin however was at his best trying to pull out the match in his favours by winning one more game and giving tough fight to Kanchan and Nishanth. However in the end Kanchan / Nishanth prevailed over Soppin and Harpal by 6 – 2 becoming the first finalist for Event 1.

Final Scores :
Kanchan / Nishanth by Soppin / Harpal : 6 – 2

Day Eight

HunFord Open Day 8 was a big day for group B which had not given a clear picture as to which teams were going to make it to semis.

In first match, Nishanth and Kanchan were up against Rajesh and Malini. Nishanth and Kanchan only have one victory from their previous two encounters. They need to win this one for brightening their chances to make to semis. They were quick to convert the available opportunities and take lead quickly. However Rajesh showed some really good fight, backing up Malini very well, making some really amazing shots which were applauded not only by spectators but also by their opponents. However this was shortlived as Nishanth & Kanchan quickly wrapped them up, winning by 6 – 2. Full credit to the teams and the organizers for holding their patience as rain interrupted the match twice, but still they went on with the game to ensure that the matches are completed well within the planned timeframe.

With two victories in their kitty Raj and Sampath have virtually made it to the semis. However a big defeat at hands of their opponents Rebecca and Akhil can see them out of competition and making way for Rebecca and Akhil who have won one match in their league matches till now. But Raj and Sampath had other plans. Some really fast serves from Raj and good winners from Sampath saw them taking a very early lead. Adding to this, they received some support from their opponents who provided them few chances as well as made some unforced errors. This helped Raj and Sampath to win this encounter 6 – 1 and sealing the berth in semis by topping the table in their group. This also ensure that Kanchan / Nishanth also sealed their semifinal berth being second in their group.

Final Scores :
Raj / Sampath bt Rebecca / Akhil : 6 – 1
Kanchan / Nishanth by Rajesh / Malini : 6 – 2

Match Summary (Day 7)

Day Seven

Boy!!! That was some tennis action on Friday!!! With 6 teams’ semi-final hopes clinging on to their respective games, we witnessed some nail biting tennis on Day 7 of HunFord Open 2010. This was the penultimate day of the Round Robin games in this year’s event, and by the end of the day’s action everyone was panting for breath having seen 3 great games of tennis!!!

The Day Opener:
The first match saw Group D teams Mayank-Noble and Adi-Sonu facing each other in the do-or-die situation. The equation was such that Vinu-Apurva from this Group had already made it to the semifinals, and whosoever wins this game would be through to the semis as well. The game started with a bang with Mayank serving his trademark zooming and bouncing serves and winning the first game. However Adi struck back with equally good serves and took the score to 1 game each. After this game it was Noble’s serve and he started serving with ferocious speed. However Adi and Sonu audaciously held their racquets and were able to break Noble’s serves to gain a 2-1 lead. Mayank-Noble were not to be left behind and they immediately struck back by breaking Sonu’s serve to equalize the scores at 2-2. At this point came the crucial moment of the game when Adi-Sonu were able to neutralize Mayank’s serves by standing behind the baseline. They played some beautiful returns along with some aggressive net play thus gaining a 3-2 lead. Notwithstanding the break of serve, Mayank and Noble fought hard to come back in the game with some wonderful winners and classy net-play thus entertaining the crowd to the fullest. Mayank was at his controlled best making no errors whatsoever, with Noble fully complementing him at the net with those cheeky drop-shots and booming serves. Adi with his infectious energy was running all over the court covering both baseline and net. Sonu was also in a good form making no errors in her returns. At one point of the game, both Mayank and Noble came to the net thus blocking her shots, and Sonu played a lob which dropped just inside the baseline. After some enervating cross court rallies and some fiery shots by all the players, Adi-Sonu emerged winners and the final score line read 8-5 which does not truly reflect the nail-biting action which everyone witnessed.

Who would take the top spot?
Match 2 saw the match of the top performing teams in Group B with the strong team of Raj-Sampath playing the classy pair of Nishanth-Kanchan. This was being touted as the biggest game of the Group-B and had a lot hinging upon it, with the winner of this game most likely to gain the top-spot in their group. Hard-hitting Raj was complemented with controlled game of Sampath, and facing them were two gracious players in Kanchan and Nishanth. It was game-on from the first game itself with Kanchan starting with her servers. The rallies were fast and long with Raj playing aggressive at the net, Sampath not making a single mistake anywhere and Nishanth and Kanchan returning with such composure which is only seen in pros. None of the serves were broken and after 4 games the score read 2-2. At this crucial juncture it was Kanchan again who was serving, and with some beautifully controlled shots Raj-Sampath were able to break her serve thus gaining a 3-2 lead. However Kanchan and Nishanth were not to be left behind, and they immediately broke back Raj’s serves to equalize the scores at 3-3. This was when Sampath rose to the occasion with his flawless execution of rallies, which led to some unforced errors by Kanchan and Nishanth. Raj and Sampath won two consecutive games thus gaining a lead of 5-3. Kanchan then held on to her serve for the 9th game taking the score to 5-4, but this was Sampath’s day as he served out his game winning the same thus resulting in the winning score of 6-4.

In the third but very crucial match for deciding both the places for semis in Group A, Soppin/ Harpal who had one win and one loss were up against Tanmay / Lopa who had won both their previous encounters. Soppin / Harpal started off well and immediately took lead over Tanmay / Lopa. Some good shots and serve from Harpal, who was a surprise package today, provided the support to Soppin who was at his best as usual. Tanmay did play some wonderful shots and winners but that was not sufficient for them to prevent Soppin and Harpal from victory as they lost 6 – 2. Interestingly with this defeat, Tanmay and Lopa who were at the top of the table from Group A have now moved to third place making way for Soppin / Harpal and Ajeet/Vinayak into the semis who are now the topper and runners respectively in Group A.

Final Scores :
Aditya / Sonu bt Mayank / Noble : 8 – 5
Raj / Sampath bt Kanchan / Nishanth : 6 – 3
Soppin / Harpal bt Tanmay / Lopa : 6 – 2

Match Summary and Points Table (Day 6)

Team standings with some interesting equations

How the teams stand in the HunFord Open:

With the major chunk of matches getting over, the teams are looking forward at the semis of the two events in the HunFord open starting next week. But still we have 2 day of tennis left for the league matches which in itself promises to bring a lot of excitement. So how do the teams stand with 2 days of tennis more to go?

We start with Event 2. Group C has finished all its matches and we already have the semi finalist from group C. After winning both their league matches, Supriya and Nagesh finish at top, while Shaunak and Prajeet after their victory over Swamy and Vinit have registered the second place for semis from Group C.

Vinu and Apurva sealed their berth in semis winning both their league matches and finishing at the top of group D. This means Shaunak / Prajeet now face Vinu and Apurva in one of the semis.

With once more crucial match to go in group D, the second spot is still for sale. Mayank/Noble and Aditya/Sonu need to fight it out for this place on Friday and winner of this battle face Nagesh and Supriya for the second semifinal of event 2.

The more the number of teams in a group, the more complex scenario they present to you and this is what Group A and B have in store for you. Tanmay and Lopa can make this very simple by winning their last match of group A. This would mean Tanmay and Lopa finish at the top, while Ajeet and Vinayak finish second in this group ensuring the semi final berth for both these teams. But Soppin and Harpal can spoil their party by beating Tanmay and Lopa and making the scenario a bit complicated. The key then would be the score by which they defeat Tanmay and Lopa. Interestingly, a 6 – 3 victory of Soppin / Harpal over Tanmay / Lopa sees both these teams through to semis, while Ajeet / Vinayak can just feel a bit unlucky. A score worse than 6 – 3, i.e. 6 – 4 or above, would mean Soppin / Harpal even though they win the match but would not be able to make to semis as Tanmay / Lopa and Ajeet / Vinayak would have better win / lose ratio. Similarily a 2 – 6, 1 – 6 or a 0 – 6 loss by Tanmay / Lopa would show them the exit door. Interesting this seems like and IPL run rate calculation .
Considering the current form of Raj / Sampath and Nishanth / Kanchan, they should be through to the semis. However, Rebecca and Akhil can still spoil their party after clinching a crucial victory over Rajesh and Malini. With still 3 more matches to go for group B, there is a lot at stake for these teams to play for.
So guys the Game is still on….

Story by Ajeet.

Day Six

HunFord Open Day 6 saw 3 matches played at Bridford. The first match saw Rebecca and Akhil facing Rajesh and Malini. After losing their respective first matches, both the teams needed to win this one to stay in the competition. This was visible in the match too as each of them were fighting for each and every crucial points. While Rajesh hit some wonderful winners, Rebecca used the court dimensions to hit the ball away from Rajesh and Malini to gain some points. Akhil displayed some powerful shots and a couple of them did earn him points and games as well. None of the team was eager to give away the game some times by holding on to their serves and at other times breaking the oppositions serve. No doubt the scoreboard was crawling at 1-1, 2-2, 3-3 and so on. While serving for match point at 6-5, Rebecca / Akhil lost their serve to some good returns by Malini mixed by a couple of double faults by them, pushing the game to only the second tie-breaker of the tournament in 11 matches so far. In the tie breaker Rebecca and Akhil were quick to take early lead and finished the match with 9-7 in the tie breaker.

Match 2 saw the decider for the place in semis between Shaunak/Prajeet and Swami/Vinit. After losing their respective first match in the group C, this was the only chance for one of the teams to go through the semis. Some good powerful serves by Shaunak and good returns from Prajeet saw them take an early lead of 3-1. It was then when Swami lifted his game hitting out fast serves as well as good strong returns and slowly Swami and Vinit started crawling back into the game. As was expected, the crowd was entertained by some really good cross court rallies and cheeky shots being played across net which were returned with equally grace by both Swami and Shaunak. Meanwhile there some big lofted shots being played from baseline by both Vinit and Prajeet. However a couple of unforced errors by Vinit handed Shaunak/Prajeet not only the victory but also the ticket to the semis. With this match Group C has finished all its matches.

Match 3 saw Ajeet and Vinayak face Soppin and Harpal in the Group A encounter. Both team riding high on the victories in their previous match need to win this encounter to ensure a berth in the semis of event 1. A defeat for Ajeet & Vinayak here would mean their exit from the tournament while a defeat for Soppin / Harpal would complicate the equations in group A leaving the final match to be a decider for both the berths in the Semis. All these complications did bring some pressure over the players as the match started. As had been the case in the previous matches too, Ajeet and Vinayak were quick to take an early lead breaking the very first serve of the game. While they were cruising comfortably first at 3-1 and then at 4-2, suddenly Soppin started turning the heat on to Ajeet and Vinayak. The pressure was clearly visible on Ajeet and Vinayak as they squandered the lead of 4-2, trailing by a set at 4-5. Despite the fact that during this time Vinayak made some unbelievable returns from the baseline but the team could not hold on to these chances. Then, when it seemed that similar to the first match where Ajeet / Vinayak messed up their early lead to lose the match, the crowd was witness to some cracking smashes followed by good service from Vinayak which saw them through in the close match winning by 7-5.

Final Scores :
Rebecca / Akhil bt Malini / Rajesh : 7 – 6(9– 7)
Shaunak / Prajeet bt Swamy / Vinit : 8 – 4
Vinayak / Ajeet by Soppin / Harpal : 7 – 5

Match Summary and Points Tabls (Day 5)

Day Five

HunFord Open Day 5 saw 2 crucial matches played at Bridford. Sachin/Shardul faced Vinayak/Ajeet in their last match in the league, with both teams needing a victory in this match to have an outside chance to make it to semis. On the other side Mayank/Noble were facing Vinu Apurva in their first match of the tournament.

First match saw Sachin & Shardul facing Vinayak & Ajeet. After losing both their previous match, Sachin & Shardul were playing for pride and to gain an outside chance of making to the semis, while Vinayak & Ajeet after losing their first game needed to win this one to keep their semis dreams alive. Ajeet & Vinayak playing in tandem at nets produced some good smashes and taking and early lead of 3 – 1 by breaking Shardul. Then there was no looking backing for them as they kept on increasing their lead. Meanwhile there some good winners hit by Shardul and some smashing serves, served by Sachin. In the end Vinayak & Ajeet prevailed 6 – 2 over Sachin / Shardul whose journey in the HunFord open came to an early end.

Mayank & Noble paired up against Vinu and Apurva for second match of group D. Crowd was witness to some really good rallies between the foursome running all over the court and displaying good tennis show. The match, also disrupted by rain god for few moments, gave a tough time to the umpires and lines-men as well who had a tough time picking up the right calls with serves and shots going so fast. The match which went on till 5 – 5, witnessed some several deuce games and several serve breaks with Noble dropping some cheeky ones across the net and Apurva hitting some smashing shots from the net. While these two were displaying the power from the net, Mayank and Vinu held on to the baseline with some classic shots and coming to net and playing equally well drop shots. It was at 5 – 5 when Mayank and Noble lost their serve and were unable to break the next one when Vinu and Apurva gained a crucial lead of 7 – 5. Mayank and noble then held on to their serve to push the game to 7 – 6 but Vinu served his game out to see his team through to semis.

Day Four

Shaunak and Prajeet play their first match of the tournament against Nagesh/Supriya who are already high on confidence after winning their first encounter. And the two teams entertained the crowd with display of some really powerful shots. With Nagesh and Shaunak providing some big fast serves and Prajeet providing smashing backhand shots, Supriya was not to be left behind for her cheeky shots and drop shots. The game seemed to be equally poised, when Shaunak/Prajeet broke Supriya’s serve to take a lead. This lead was short lived when Nagesh/Supriya broke the very next serve of Prajeet to push the score to 3 – 3. With game eaqually poised till 5 – 5, Nagesh/Supriya again took a lead first by breaking and then holding on to their serve and taking the score to 7-5. Shaunak and Prajeet fought back to hold on their serve. Life was not so easy for Nagesh while serving for the match as the game witnessed a series of deuce when finally Nagesh and Supriya crossed the winning line after facing a stiff competition from Shaunak and Prajeet and becoming the first team to ensure the semi final berth in the HunFord Open.

The second match saw Tanmay and Lopa playing their second match with Sachin and Shardul. Where Tanmay and Lopa wanted to continue their winning streak, Sachin and Shardul were playing to keep their semi final dreams alive after losing their first match. The teams held on to their serve to game the game alive at 2-2, when suddenly Tanmay started building pressure on Sachin who committed some unforced errors by hitting shots out. Shardul was instrumental in getting some points for their team by hitting some good winners while Lopa also produced some unexpected winners. Finally Tanmay and Lopa crossed the winning line by winning the match 6-3.

Final Scores :
Supriya / Nagesh bt Shaunak / Prajeet : 8 – 6
Lopa / Tanmay bt Sachin / Shardul : 6 – 3

Match summary and Points Table (Day 3)

Day Three

HunFord Open Day 3 witnessed the first matches at the Bridford Tennis Court. The really lengthy and tiring match between Apurva – Vinu vs Aditya – Sonu late evening on 13th May, left no fuel in Apurva & Vinu to be ready for the next encounter immediately the next day. This left the day 3 to see only two matches rather than the 3 scheduled for the day. Well 3 matches or 2, the crowd was at its full strength to witness the encounters for the day – Sachin/Shardul vs Soppin/Harpal and Rebecca/Akhil vs Kanchan/Nishanth.

Sachin/Shardul faced Soppin/Harpal for the second match of the group A. Sachin/Shardul started with a bang taking an early 3-1 lead over Soppin/Harpal and it seemed as if they are in a hurry to finish off the match quickly. But Soppin & Harpal and other plans altogether. After a really very lengthy game which saw around 8 deuces, finally Soppin/Harpal broke Sachin’s serve and then started their winning march. And very similar to the first match of the Group A, they went on to win the next 4 games to win the match. However they did face a very tough fight from Sachin/Shardul but their effort just marginally couldn't’t see them through as Soppin/Harpal won the game 6-3.

The second match saw Rebecca & Akhil squaring the battlefield with Kanchan & Nishanth. Where Nishanth & Kanchan served out to win their first game, Rebecca & Akhil were not to be left behind winning their first game as well. The crowd was witness to some good rallies accompanied by some good shots, few of them sailing over the court to the lake next to the court although. After giving some good fight to Nishanth & Kanchan, Rebecca & Akhil lost a couple of their serves giving Nishanth& Kanchan the lead just at the right time when they needed. Holding on to the opportunities received, Nishanth & Kanchan went on to win the game 6-2.

Final Scores :
Soppin/Harpal bt Sachin/Shardul : 6 – 3
Kanchan/Nishanth bt Rebecca/Akhil : 6 – 2

Day Two

HunFord Open Day 2 saw the kickstart of Event 2 on Thursday. But no, not with Tennis Game but with Nishanth’s B’day celebrations. All the participants gathered at the Hunters Chase Tennis Court to give the B’Day Bash to Nishanth. The Cake cutting ceremony was then followed by some great tennis games by the experts, with Nagesh & Supriya teaming up against Swami & Vineet for the first match of the event 2

Match Summary:

Nagesh & Supriya were bang on target breaking the very first serve of the game, but Swami & Vinit fought back to get themselves back into game with some superb net smashes from Swami and equally good baseline shots from Vinit. But court seemed to be too small for Nagesh & Supriya who took turns to cover the entire baseline area, running from one end to another. In the end Nagesh & Supriya prevailed over Swami & Vineet winning the game 8 – 4.

The second match saw Aditya & Sonu battling out with Vinu & Apurva. The initial half of the game only determined that this won’t be and easy cake for any of these teams. Where the powerful serves from Vinu was matched by equally powerful serves from Aditya, the cool game from Sonu matched the equally cool game from Apurva. With nobody losing any serve, the game went on to 3 – 3 when finally Aditya and Sonu broke Apurva’s serve to take the lead. But Vinu & Apurva would not sit quietly and were right back in game breaking the next serve from Sonu and getting the game back to equal on 5-5.Then the series of serve breaks continued, when Aditya and Sonu held on to their nerve to finally serve for 2 match points at 7-6. But this game was not going to be over so soon. Two double faults from Aditya saw Vinu and Apurva back into game pushing the match to tie breaker after 8 – 8. In the tie breaker Vinu and Apurva took an early lead to 5-2 but Aditya Sonu made a comeback but finally losing the tiebreaker by 7-5.

Final Scores :
Nages & Supriya bt Swami & Vineet : 8 – 4
Vinu & Apurva bt Aditya & Sonu : 8 – 8 (7-5)

Few lighter moments of Day 1..

Our Very Very Enthusiastic Supporters..

Well there were so many supporters that kids were to be taken on back to see the match… :)little exaggeration is allowed, isn’t it?

We even had a six in the “Tennis Match” Prajeet saving the ball after it was hit for a “HOME RUN”

An upcoming Tennis Star..

The event, we all waited for, finally had a start which it deserved…. It was meant for the People to come along and enjoy, and that’s exactly happened beside Tennis :)
We had an awesome group of people all gathered to enjoy some nice game of Tennis. Probably even US open would not have this kind of crowd. I am sorry “Enthusiastic Crowd”

Match Summary:

The first match was played between Ajeet and Vinayak v/s Tanmay and Lopa.
The match started off as was the general expectation – with some crackling shots from Tanmay and some nimble footwork by Ajeet at the nets.

These two were aptly support by Lopa bhabi and Vinayak respectively. A few moments later Ajeet and Vinayak were cruising ahead with 3-1.
A small break and a side change later Tanmay & Lopa bhahi were back in the game and played very consistently to get the score back to 3-3.

Meanwhile, there were some easy chances missed by Ajeet, who was a playing a little more passively that his usual game. Sooner, Vinayak was starting to get a rhythm back in his service, unfortunately it was too late for them.

So in the end, some cleanly executed shots by Tanmay, consistent returns by Lopa bhahi and unforced errors by Ajeet & Vinayak ensured that the game was won by Tanmay & Lopa with 6-3 as the final score.

Well… congratulations to the winners and good luck to the other team for their upcoming matches.
Overall – great tennis played and oh, some great line umpiring as well ;-)

The second match started with a delay. This too was marked by the maiden appearances of all 4 players in a major tournament. The match was Raj & Sampath v/s Malini & Rajesh. Raj and Sampath both had shown quite a promise in the practice sessions.

The match started off with an unexpected note. Rajesh showed a lot of promise in his technique. His forehand was swift and serves were crisp. Viewers started to believe that the teams are, after all evenly balanced. For a first timer, Malini played quite well. She returned most of her shots well.

But Raj and Sampath played to their perfection, reaching out to return each shot and making as
few errors as possible. In the end they won by 6-0!
Congratulations to the winners.
